At Layered Works, we create practical 3D printed organisers, storage products and custom printed items. This guide explains what to expect from 3D printed products, including surface finish, layer lines, material differences, colour variation and general product care.
3D printing is different from injection moulding or mass manufactured plastic products. Our products are designed to be useful, tidy and practical, while still having the normal characteristics of the 3D printing process.
1. What to expect from 3D printed products
3D printed products are made layer by layer. Because of this, it is normal for finished items to show some visible signs of the printing process.
This may include:
- visible layer lines
- small surface marks
- minor texture differences
- slight colour variation
- small differences between batches
- minor cosmetic marks from supports, print orientation or finishing
These are normal features of 3D printed products and will usually not affect how the product works.
2. Layer lines and surface texture
Layer lines are one of the most common characteristics of 3D printing. They appear because each product is built up in thin layers of material.
Some products, colours and materials may show layer lines more clearly than others. This can depend on the shape of the product, print direction, material type, lighting and colour.
Layer lines are not normally a fault unless they affect the function or strength of the product.
3. Materials we use
We use different materials depending on the product, colour and intended application.
Materials may include:
- PLA: commonly used for rigid organisers, holders and general storage products
- PLA Plus: similar to PLA, often used where a tougher or improved finish is preferred
- TPU: a flexible material used for selected protective covers, boots and parts that need some give
- PETG: used for selected products where extra toughness or temperature resistance may be more suitable
The material used can affect the feel, flexibility, finish and appearance of the final product.
4. Colour variation
We do our best to show product colours clearly, but colours may vary slightly between what you see on screen and the item you receive.
This can be caused by:
- screen brightness and colour settings
- lighting used in product photos
- camera settings
- material batches
- the material type used
- print direction and surface texture
If you need a specific colour for a custom order, please contact us before ordering and we will confirm what options are available.
5. Product photos and included items
Product photos are used to show how an item looks and how it may be used.
Tools, sockets, batteries, darts, accessories, branded items or display items shown in photos are not included unless the product description clearly says they are included.
Please always check the product title, description, variation options and included items before ordering.
6. Fit and compatibility
Many Layered Works products are designed around specific tools, socket sizes, organisers, batteries or product types.
Please check measurements, product descriptions, compatibility notes and variation options carefully before placing an order.
If you are unsure whether a product will fit your tools or setup, please contact us before ordering and we will do our best to help.
7. Made to order and custom products
Many products are printed, prepared or finished after an order is placed. Custom products may be made to specific customer requirements, colours, dimensions or design details.
Because of this, small differences may occur between batches or between similar products. This is normal for 3D printed and made to order items.
For custom requests, please provide clear details, photos, measurements and intended use so we can understand what you need.
8. Strength and use
Our products are designed for practical organisation, storage and display purposes unless clearly stated otherwise.
Customers should use products only for their intended purpose and avoid overloading, forcing, bending, modifying or using them in unsuitable conditions.
3D printed products may not be suitable for high heat, heavy impact, excessive load, outdoor exposure or safety critical use unless the product description clearly states otherwise.
9. Heat and storage
Some 3D printed materials can soften, deform or become damaged when exposed to high temperatures.
To help protect your product:
- do not leave items in direct sunlight for long periods
- avoid placing items near heaters or heat sources
- avoid leaving suitable materials in very hot vehicles
- store products in normal indoor conditions where possible
- use products only as described in the product listing
If you need a product for a warmer environment, please contact us before ordering so we can advise where possible.
10. Magnetic products
Some products may include magnets or be designed as magnetic organisers. Please check each product listing for details of what is included.
Unless a product is clearly described as suitable for upright, wall mounted or suspended use, magnetic organisers should be treated as storage products for drawers, toolboxes, benches or similar flat surfaces.
Do not overload magnetic products or use them in a way that could cause tools, accessories or the organiser to fall.
11. Cleaning and care
Most products can be wiped clean with a dry or lightly damp cloth.
Do not use harsh chemicals, solvents, abrasive cleaners or excessive heat when cleaning 3D printed products, as this may damage the material or finish.
12. When something is not right
If you believe your item is faulty, damaged, incorrect or not as described, please contact us as soon as possible.
Please include your order number, details of the issue and clear photos so we can review it quickly.
Nothing in this guide affects your statutory rights under UK consumer law.
